Ahead of ‘Batwara 1947’s release, Sunny Deol‘s iconic action drama ‘Ghayal’ is returning to the big screen. The Rajkumar Santoshi directorial, which earned Sunny a National Award and became one of Bollywood’s most celebrated action films, will re-release in select theatres starting August 7. This gives fans a chance to relive the classic before ‘Batwara 1947’ arrives in cinemas on August 14.

Sharing the news on Instagram, Zee Studios posted Sunny Deol’s look from the film and wrote, “Taiyaar ho jao OG Action Hero ka dum dekhne bade parde par, fir ek baar – GHAYAL is back in select cinemas from 7th August #Ghayal.” Check it out here.
Sunny Deol recalls the film’s journey
‘Ghayal’ completed 36 years on June 22, 2026. Marking the milestone, Sunny Deol reflected on the making of the film, crediting his late father Dharmendra’s belief in the project and director Rajkumar Santoshi’s writing for bringing it to life. Sharing a video of his iconic scenes from the film, he captioned it, “Papa’s belief and Raj’s writing made ‘Ghayal’ possible. Your love made it immortal.”

‘Ghayal’ followed Ajay Mehra’s fight for justice for himself and his family, with Meenakshi Seshadri playing his love interest Varsha Bharti. Amrish Puri’s portrayal of antagonist Balwant Rai remains one of the film’s most memorable elements. The ensemble cast also included Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Raj Babbar, Moushmi Chatterjee and Om Puri. The film earned Sunny Deol a National Award (Special Jury Award), shared with Pankaj Kapur and Jayabharathi. It was originally released on June 22, 1990, followed by a sequel, ‘Ghayal Again’, in 2016.
