Shubman Gill retired hurt after suffering cramps

India captain Shubman Gill retired hurt after suffering cramps in his right leg during India’s chase of 259 in the first ODI against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Tuesday.Gill was batting on 80 off 75 balls when he experienced discomfort in the 26th over of the innings. After facing a full delivery from Josh Tongue that beat the outside edge, the India skipper removed his gloves, crouched on the pitch and clutched the back of his right leg before deciding to walk off the field.The injury came just after Gill and Shreyas Iyer had added a 100-run partnership to put India in control of the chase. Washington Sundar came in as the replacement batter.England made an immediate comeback in the next over. Shreyas Iyer was run out after a mix of quick running and sharp fielding from Harry Brook.Washington Sundar pushed a delivery from Jofra Archer towards mid-on, prompting Iyer to set off for a run. While running to the striker’s end, Iyer changed his path to avoid being hit by the ball, costing him valuable time. Brook collected the ball cleanly and hit the stumps directly, catching Iyer short of his crease.Earlier, Joe Root and Liam Dawson rescued England with a 121-run stand for the seventh wicket to help the hosts post 258 in the first ODI.England were cruising at 61 without loss before India triggered a collapse that left them at 107 for 6 by the 22nd over. Root scored 76 off 76 balls, while Dawson made a career-best 68 off 83 deliveries as the pair rebuilt the innings and took England to a total of 258.
