Walkover sends Satwik-Chirag into BWF World Championships pre-quarters; Tanisha-Dhruv also advance

Indian men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty moved into the pre-quarterfinals of the BWF World Championships in New Delhi on Wednesday without playing a match after their Scottish opponents withdrew.The fifth-seeded Indian pair, who have won two bronze medals at the World Championships, had received a first-round bye. They were scheduled to face Scotland’s Alexander Dunn and Adam Pringle in the second round.However, Dunn and Pringle withdrew at the last moment, giving Satwik and Chirag a place in the round of 16.In mixed doubles, Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila also reached the pre-quarterfinals after beating Macau’s Leong Iok Chong and Ng Weng Chi 21-11, 21-11 in their round-of-32 match.Crasto and Kapila will now be India’s only remaining pair in the mixed doubles event after Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde lost to Canada’s Jonathan Bing Tsan Lai and Crystal Lai 22-20, 19-21, 17-21.Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh also exited the tournament after losing a close match to Turkey’s Emre Sonmez and Yasemen Bektas 21-16, 29-30, 22-24.Dhruv and Tanisha are competing at their second BWF World Championships. They had reached the quarterfinals in the 2025 edition in Paris before exiting at that stage.They will next face the sixth-seeded Chinese pair of Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui in the third round.Among the other Indians in action on Wednesday are two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, Ayush Shetty and Lakshya Sen.
